TAIWAN-PART 2: DAY 5-10: KAOHSIUNG, YANGMINGSHAN, TAIPEI

Taiwan: Day 5-10
Continuation from previous post of Taiwan!

Day 5: Kaohsiung - ChiChin Island, Love River
We decided to change our departure from Star Villa to a later timing around 11 and informed Star Villa the night before. They arranged for transport and called a cab to pick us up ! The journey took around an hour and we were dropped off once again at the Taichung Train station for us to get our High speed rail to Zuoying Station (Kaohsiung). We departed at 14:01 and reached at 15:00 pm! The High Speed rail is really very fast and convenient! We brought our luggage along and walk out of the train station, around 2 mins walk, we found our hotel!:D Sorry did not get pictures of the lobby, but only the entrance to the rooms from the lift!

By the time we checked in and settled down it was kind of late. We shouldn't have taken our time!! But guess we were on a relaxed mode.. haha. We decided that we wanted to go to ChiChin Island for seafood dinner and to walk around! On our way there we saw several stalls and I saw one which sold a cute pet pig! Maybe its not meant to be a pet.. but its so cute-- I want a pig as a pet! haha

Babe the pig!

We took a stroll over to the ferry where we would take a boat across to the island. Tickets were really cheap cant remember how much probably around 50 cents? What a pity by the time we crossed the river it was quite dark already:( There were night stalls set up along in the island selling the usuals- fried squid, smelly tofu, ice-creams, seafood stuffs.. and quite a few seafood restaurants. We found one which was fantastic!!!!!!We ordered a fresh fish, crabs, veg, and fried oysters! -YUM.. The name of the restaurant is Wen Chin Seafood Restaurant and their contact number is: (07) 571-4568.

As it wasn't too late, we decided to go to the Love River.. Quite disappointed as well. It was just a river with few food stalls around and a band playing music. We got waffles as desert and listened to the band play for awhile. After that we headed back to our comfortable hotel for a good nights rest!:D

Day 6: Kaohsiung- Dream Mall, Liouhe Night Market
Rise and Shine! Started off with a delicious buffet breakfast at Hotel Dua! However, this place is for early birds where the buffet closes at 10 am! How early is that! We rushed down and tried to take all the things we wanted and slowly enjoyed our feast- haha Eating is just awesome!
Today was our shopping day- off to the Dream Mall! We were quite excited as this was supposedly the largest mall in Taiwan.. When we got there we were a little disappointed! It was quite big.. some shops were selling cars? and there was a theme park above on the highest floor however the clothes there were just backdated and hm.. prefer Taipei 101 anytime! We walked around-didn't buy anything and then decided to catch the movie THOR! Least that was good! We then went up to the theme park to play some basketball.. We saw a couple taking their bridal picture!

Dream Mall at Kaohsiung
For dinner, we decided to go to the Liouhe night market! We tried the Smelly Tofu, pig trotters and prawn noodles, Papaya Milk.. The Smelly Tofu there was So smelly! The papaya milk was the only thing that was nice and seemed very popular too! People usually say the tofu is smelly but once you eat it you wont be able to smell it, however for ours, it wasn't too smelly before eating, but after you ate it, the pungent smell just shoot up your throat and nose!! We weren't too satisfied and ended up at this little restaurant that sold steak with spaghetti-yum!

Eventhough all that food, I don't think I would be going back to Kaohsiung for awhile..

Day 7: Taipei- YangMing Shan Hotspring
We took the train back to Taipei and then took a cab to YangMingShan to our hotspring resort! It was quite a long journey! I kept thinking I was going to arrive ..but noo.. However, it was a worthwhile trip! The resort was great! There weren't many people in the hotsprings and there were a few pools that had different scent-although I could not really tell the difference. Seems like different pools had different health benefits~ I really liked the one with the ones that sprayed water onto your back! Good for people with back aches:D I even saw a lady who had a face mask on:S The service staff will pass us a plastic hair cap-probably for hygiene reasons. We were probably in the hot springs longer than the recommended time, which you can read on the instructions in your room!
The room was nice! and the private hot springs was awesome! It looked like those in the olden days as they provided a wooden scoop as well! It was such a wonderful relaxing experience! Not sure about the effects on my aching bones... haha maybe I got to go consistently for a week? Who would want to sponsor my free stay pls, I'll be forever grateful !

As the room I booked on Agoda came with dinner, we headed off for Mongolian Barbeque Dinner Buffet! Traveller J and I thought it was simply delicious! We ate so much meat! You choose your own meat, add your own sauce and pass it to the chef to cook! There were other things in the buffet as well! We were SO full that night! Happy Travellers once more!

That concludes our stay at YangMingshan Hot Spring resort!

Day 8: Taipei - Taipei 101, Wulaoguo Hotpot
We got on the bus that was headed to Taipei and took around 1 hr+. Remember to wait for the bus on time! The bus stopped us at a stop which was around a 5 minutes walk from the Taipei Train station! This time our room at Cosmos was much better.. bigger and the musky smell was gone! Wohoo!- But then we found a bug:(.. We informed the front desk and they said they would send someone to clean the room! Did not find it after that, but hmm... We left our bags and off we went to Taipei 101 for lunch and Shopppping!! We had Ding Dai Fung for lunch! I think its better than the one in Singapore. The portion of the drunken chicken was probably twice the portion in Singapore! Sorry for the unsightly picture.. we were very hungry!

Lunch @ Ding Dai Fung
We checked out Prada to have a look and I think it was cheaper in Taiwan than in Singapore..We were so tired after our shopping after a whole day of walking that we just sat and drank some coffee and chilled. For dinner, Traveller J had already booked this famous Elixer Health Hot Pot- Wulaoguo Hotpot. Seriously, if you do come to Taipei You must come to this restaurant!! The soup base was potently full of all sorts of herbs which makes the taste and smell absolutely Mouth watering!! They had tofu icecream too which you have to add into the soup base!! They ended by giving us this cooling refreshing ice drink! The service was really good too. The whole experience was really awesome, however, Remember to book in advance, as there were quite alot of people. Also, They had a 1.5 or 2 hour time restriction which I did not like..  After dinner we caught a cab back to our hotel and called it a night!

2 soup base!
Foooooood

Day 9: Taipei- Jiufen, Ximending
Today we had a craving for some Chinese breakfast and soya bean milk! Actually we heard of one which was really good- YongHe Dou Jiang, however they are so popular they usualy sell out by 10am, and there would be a long queue. As we are not early birds, we decided to go to another. We took a cab and wanted to go Fuhang Dou Jiang/ Fuhang Soy Milk, however when we got into the cab, the cab driver told us that there was another better one which was the originator of Fuhang Dou Jiang, thus we agreed and decided to go to the other instead, which was called Shi Jie Dou Jiang . This is what we ordered! The food was not bad, but maybe next time if I do go again, I'll try the one with the long queues haha..

Our breakfast!
The cab driver agreed to wait for us while we quickly had our breakfast and then send us to Jiufen after! I've been looking forward to this as I heard from a friend the food was just yummy! Jiufen is located around 45 minutes -1 hr away from Taipei City. Its a small street on mountainous ground which contain little stores selling all kinds of food and other stuff. We bought Pineapple tarts, Yummy Meatballs, Fishballs, Lu Rou Fan, Mochis, Peanuts, icecream Popiah, Grandma Lai's Sweet Taro Ball, almond milk and etc! I can't really spell out the food stall names as my chinese ain't fantastic, but I did capture pictures of them.. Check them out!

It was quite crowded inside and warm, good thing the weather outside was quite cool. I would advise you to go during winter/ autumn - not too hot! We bought back some stuff as well! After all that eating, we caught the bus from Jiufen back to Taipei City!
We walked around Taipei, found a cute Barbie Cafe along the way, but did not go in. and then at night, we went to XimenDing to have walk around and have dinner! This area was quite *happening* where there were street performances, lots of food and clothes! We initially wanted to stay around here but ended up staying at Cosmos, maybe next time I would try out a hotel- amba Taipei Ximending! We stopped by the famous Ah Chung Mien Xian (Ah Chung's Mee Suah) and Traveller J was so happy as he loved it! We were quite full after also eating the EXTRA LARGE fried chicken which was even bigger than our faces and some snacks! Thus, we settled for a steamboat dinner in which Traveller J and I shared one pot!

To end the night, we met an old friend with her friends as she happened to be in Taiwan for some exchange program!

Day 10: Taipei - Shida Night Market, Chia Te Bakery
Today we decided to go shopping at SOGO, and we couldn't get enough of Ding Dai Fung so we went back there to have our lunch, as there was an outlet at SOGO. Shopped some more and then decided to buy back some pastries! We chose Chia Te (Link) which only had one store outlet in the whole Taipei! It was hard to find, so we decided to catch a cab. When we got there, there was a line and a lady at the door for crowd control! Looked like something you would see in a branded store! Haha- Traveller J bought a whole load of stuff, and I just bought a variety of items. We bought pineapple tarts, other pastries with egg in them, Tai Yang Ping, and egg tarts! YUM! If you do go to Taiwan come here for your pastries! But actually, there are many other stalls selling similar items as well. But somehow, we preferred the pastries here!

We left all our stash back at Cosmos hotel, and ventured out again! It was sadly our last night in Taiwan and wanted to make full use of our night! We went out to Shida Night Market! This is the place where majority of the university students are! There were stalls along each street- Lots of Shopping at reasonable prices and food stalls too! We had barbeque chicken  and pork which came with rice and soup at this little shop which was filled with students! We enjoyed ourselves here however, the period when we went was in November, thus most of the clothes were winter clothes! If you prefer summer clothing, come in summer/spring!

To end the night, we kicked our shoes back and enjoyed some beer and hot snacks in our hotel!

Day 10

Our last day in Taiwan! Boy, time sure flies when you're on holiday! We went out for some lunch nearby our hotel, then went to walk around the train station again, while Traveller J went to return the transport card in which they will refund whatever money you have there, while I went off to buy face and eye masks from their local store!
After that, we went back, packed up and took a cab to the airport for our flight back to Singapore!

Good Bye Taiwan!! It has been a good trip and See You Soon!
